How I Saved My Family Money by Going Green.
I love being green and organic. It hasn’t always been that way. Growing up, my mother always filled our refrigerator with organic whole foods. I remember being a teenager and hating that we never had regular cereals like Captain Crunch or Lucky Charms. Instead we had Cascadian Farm’s Vanilla Puffs and Chocolate O’s. My friends and I always used to make fun of my mom for her food choices.
I mean c’mon, the lady even had organic lollipops. I always felt like me and my brothers were missing out on life by not having all the “good” stuff. Fast forward ten years and I am thanking God for every food choice our mom made for us back then and the road she paved that I currently walk. I have high hopes that my current choices will reap many benefits for my family in the future.
So I know you are probably thinking one of two things.
1.) Organic living is too expensive.
2.) The only people who eat organic are granola folks who dread their hair and never shave.
There is some truth to the later but what If I told you that number one was a lie? Don’t get me wrong, green living can get pricey but if you do it right, you have nothing to lose and only health to gain.
What if I told you that nearly all of your household products (including those fancy face washes & even your baby’s wipes) contain chemicals? Chemicals that are dangerous to not only your skin health but also to your hormonal balance, your respiratory system and can even cause CANCER. The chemicals in your cleaning products are responsible for 10% of all toxic exposures reported to U.S Poison Control Centers, accounting for 206,636 calls. This number is on the rise as companies continue to produce products at a low cost. It may be a low cost to the manufacturer but your household is paying a very high price. Not only are you purchasing those products but you are having to pay the doctor bills to keep your family’s sicknesses at bay.
Do you know that over the past 45 years there has been an increase in
- Childhood Brain Cancer 38%
- Asthma 80% (I can think of four or five kids just around me that are affected by Asthma)
- Adolescent Leukemia 74%
- Early Onset Puberty 55% (Some ten year old girls have bigger cup sizes than most women I know)
- ADHD 53%
All of these illnesses are on the rise since the increase of chemical production. There are 80,000 chemicals on the market in the United States. A lot of which are never tested for their safety. They are in the materials used to build your home, in your body wash and even in the mattress you sleep on. These chemicals are all around us. They are in our food and in the air we breathe. Why, if we live in such a modernized society, are these illnesses on the rise? Why is it that mass production is so cheap? These are all questions I began to ask myself a few years back.
Why are we continuing to stay quiet about a real issue that is affecting the wellness of not only ourselves but our little cubs? If you aren’t outraged, then you haven’t done enough research.
The rise of sickness and illness is a profit for our government. It is an ugly cycle that can only be stopped with the choice to provide better quality products for our families. The ugly cycle is represented below.
Toxic Chemical→Compromised Immune System→Illness→Visit to doctor.
Here is how it plays out in full text. You as a concerned mother clean your home and your babies in order to stay “clean” and free of “germs.” The toxins in your products are then absorbed into your body and the body of your children. Those chemicals compromise your bodies nature flow and cause an illness. You then take yourself and your child to the doctor who then prescribes you medication (more chemical toxins) and you go home and clean your house to disinfect from the “germs” that caused your illness.
Welcome to the money making industry that our country is currently stuck in. I imagine this cycle as a hamster in a hamster wheel. When will you make the choice to protect your family?
I saved my family thousands of dollars in medical bills a year by making the choice to switch to plant based organic products.
Yes, it was an investment at first (or so I thought because now I realize I didn’t spend much more) but I have seen that investment reap a harvest in our mental and physical health. We are less lethargic. We rarely even get a cold these days. I WAS ABLE TO GET PREGNANT in just a month of switching to completely clean eating and green living. These are all things that can happen to your household.
